In Woolsey, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in the field, with testing facilities in cities across the nation that can carry out hair tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair either from the scalp or body can be tested. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This choice is ideal for businesses enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases. One key advantage is the extended detection window that goes up to 90 days, collected under supervision, reducing chances of manipulation. Nevertheless, urine tests remain best for detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to about three months. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the breadth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If head hair is missing, body hair in an equivalent quantity may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other hair types (like facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample as it's introduced into a lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample’s secure sealing and proper shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial overview for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-friendly approach to eliminate most samples’ drug usage, a positive result must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that are likely positive during Screening require further verification.

Should a sample be likely positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. Drugs are separated from hair here at much lower levels than other methodologies (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is the most intricate technique to conduct.

Confirmation on any positive Screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing likely positive results are washed before confirming when necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Avoiding a hair drug test is challenging, thus making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It provides an overview of drug usage trends over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test inspects the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
