Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Aiea, Hawaii. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing, coupled with our nationwide testing centers, ensures seamless service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair testing over urine tests. They are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals. A key advantage is the longer detection timeline of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and it's hard to falsify. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use, within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine specimen weight. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation process.

In cases of a presumptive positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detectability in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests often incur higher expenses than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Aiea, HI, hair follicle testing is often favored over traditional urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair testing uncovers substance use with greater accuracy and extends the detection window considerably. These advantages make hair testing an optimal choice for employers aiming to uphold strict drug-free workplace policies.

With a longer timeline for detecting drug use, hair follicle tests give a comprehensive insight into an individual's drug history, unlike urine tests which are confined to recent usage. This broadens the reliability and trustworthiness employers and legal entities have in adhering to drug testing protocols.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Aiea, HI offers an impressive window of detection, tracing drug use for up to 90 days. This extended timeline provides employers with a detailed overview of an individual's substance use history. Unlike traditional testing, which often covers a much shorter period, hair testing's wide lens facilitates comprehensive assessments.

The capability of hair follicle tests to document long-term substance use patterns enhances decision-making processes for employers. With access to such historical data, evaluating a candidate or employee's fitness for a role becomes more informed, supporting a safe and compliant workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
