Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in East Honolulu, Hawaii. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across cities nationwide that can conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are suitable. Our hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts mandate a hair drug test over a urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage includes a lengthier detection window up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making it very difficult to evade. However, for drug use detection in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands hold onto various biomarkers within their fibrous structure, offering a prolonged history of substance use. When taken directly from the scalp, hair samples provide a detection timeframe of nearly three months for alcohol and drug presence. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly akin to a #2 pencil in width) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 drugs, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When referring to head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Steps in the Process

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially integrating a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment to detect drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive result demands additional confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require subsequent confirmation.

A presumptive positive during Screening results in additional hair extraction for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the challenge of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screen occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples suspected of being positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, in conjunction with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are notably resistant to tampering, ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Chronology of use: It charts patterns of drug consumption over extended durations, unlike methods that indicate only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Typically, 5-7 days are needed before drugs manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair testing incurs higher costs relative to other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can modulate the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strata rather than the follicle situated below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in East Honolulu, HI, the former consistently offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests have benefits such as a longer detection window and minimal eviction risks. While urine tests may fail to capture long-term substance use, hair testing provides a comprehensive analysis over weeks or months. Thus, hair follicle testing is preferred for complete reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in East Honolulu, HI extends drug detection windows up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed insight into their workforce's substance use history. While urine testing only covers recent drug use, hair testing paints a broader picture of habits. This method allows for a deeper understanding, affording employers more informed decision-making regarding potential or current employees based on a comprehensive view.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In East Honolulu, HI, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing. The process's built-in security measures minimize risks of sample adulteration. This method provides unquestionable results due to the difficulty involved in tampering with hair samples compared to other methods. Companies can trust hair testing for delivering authentic outcomes, ensuring organizational integrity against any manipulation attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
