Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Halawa, Hawaii. If you require drug or alcohol analysis through hair samples, our expertise lies in hair-based testing, with centers across all American cities that can conduct these tests. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair analysis can discern drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the trend in drug testing has shifted toward hair follicle testing more often. A growing number of employers, legal courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse mandate hair drug screening over the conventional urine examination. Hair follicle testing is favored by organizations with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation cases. Its chief advantage is a longer detection duration, identifying drug use up to 90 days in a highly observable manner, resistant to tampering. However, for the most accurate assessment of drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair traps biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, offering a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can present up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid for court proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), adding to the complexity of hair drug screening methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests offer results that are more reliable due to the difficulty in cheating.
  • Provides historical insight: The test reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not suited for detecting recent use: It usually takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variance: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the exam analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
