Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Kihei, Hawaii. For those requiring drug or alcohol tests using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area with centers available nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly used in drug testing methods. Many employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict drug use policies, judicial entities, and probationers. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection time of up to 90 days, making cheating extremely difficult, though urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair can offer a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair’s collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for initial screening and later confirmation. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If ample scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively denotes scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses any other hair type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial phases in the lab processing of drug test results encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use across most samples, though a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples reporting a presumptive positive in Screening mandatorily need a secondary validation.

In the instance of a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing presents the most complex challenge to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation where necessary. The overall laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can highlight drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests feature a more restricted detection window.
  • Resilient to tampering: A hair drug test is notably difficult to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Presents historical usage data: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle itself beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
