Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kilauea, Hawaii. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analyses with test centers scattered across cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair examinations. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch sample from your scalp or body hair will be used. Hair tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance abuse screening. This approach is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and professionals in the field of Substance Abuse over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict zero-tolerance drug policies and probation officers find hair follicle tests appealing. These tests offer an extended window of detection for substance use, reaching up to 90 days, employ an observable collection process, and are hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now perceived as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, it can yield up to a three-month detection duration for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, including verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary fast check for drug use. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs further confirmation to be admissible in legal settings. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples that are initially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical patterns: It offers insights into drug use over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Kilauea, HI, the benefits are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability, capturing a comprehensive drug use history. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to a shorter detection window, hair tests provide a longer-term view.

For employers and professionals, the reliability of hair follicle testing means less room for error. In environments where zero tolerance is critical, hair tests provide a robust solution against potential drug use, effectively supporting a drug-free policy.

Extended Detection Window

The advantage of hair follicle testing in Kilauea, HI lies in its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This allows for a thorough examination of an individual's substance use history, providing employers with valuable insights into applicant behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
