Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Maalaea, Hawaii. For those requiring drug or alcohol tests via hair samples, our specialty at Accredited Drug Testing includes nationwide centers ready for hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. We analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG or offer other personalized testing options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has risen in drug testing methodologies. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts have shifted to hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests serve employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. Unlike urine tests, hair tests offer a longer monitoring period of up to 90 days, secure collection, and are difficult to deceive. However, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is recognized as a robust mechanism to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by securing biomarkers within its growing strand fibers. When hair samples are taken from the scalp, they can yield about a 90-day detection period for substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transporting is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assays beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We advise measuring the sample weight with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair imply scalp hair alone. Other body hair types include facial, axillary, et cetera.

Process Overview

The four primary phases in processing a drug test in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary insertion of a sample into the lab's database, involving validation of proper sealing and dispatch, random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) assignment, and completing leftover data not captured by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening offers a rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although it predominantly discounts drug use in samples affordably, a positive screen necessitates validation for legal acceptability. Confirmation is mandatory for samples that test positive presumptively in Screening.

If a sample is positive at the Screening stage, extra hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage isolates drugs at minimal concentrations from hair, a more complex process compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing the most intricate method to execute.

Verification of a positive Screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Up to 90 days of drug usage can be unveiled through hair drug tests, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating is difficult: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably arduous, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: Offers a recurring drug use pattern across months, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs only emerge in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing incurs higher costs in comparison with other methods.
  • Outcome variability: Hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
