Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Mililani Town, Hawaii. If a hair-based drug or alcohol exam is needed, our centers nationwide, including all cities, are equipped to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

In recent years, drug detection methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. A range of industries, courts, and substance abuse officials are opting for hair screenings instead of conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and probationary individuals favor hair testing. It offers a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and is hard to manipulate, though urine tests remain superior for identifying very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Hair, when taken close to the scalp, offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is comparatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's prudent to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair denote scalp hair specifically, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The four core stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with incorporating a sample into a laboratory's system. This process involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial detailed check for drugs of choice. Screening provides a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, but a positive screen must be validated to stand as evidence in legal settings. Samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If identified as potentially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as deemed necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection span: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a more limited detection span.
  • Challenge to subvert: It's extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides an account of drug usage over an extended duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
