Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Mokuleia, Hawaii. Whether you are seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is well-versed in hair testing, with facilities in all cities nationwide ready to conduct hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body hair may be used. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

Lately, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Many corporations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug evaluations over conventional urine tests. Organizations with drug-free guidelines, courts, and individuals on probation commonly use hair follicle drug tests. Their main advantage is a significantly extended detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected through an observed process and notoriously difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have become a recognized method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer an up to 3-month detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Outline

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug testing outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial rapid evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive result during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection range: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is highly challenging to alter a hair drug test, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers chronological data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, unlike merely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally carry a higher cost compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
