Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Paia, Hawaii. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and offer testing centers across all major cities nationwide. You'll typically require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for the test. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent for drug screening in recent years. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation are turning to hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, which is approximately 90 days, the monitored collection process, and their resistance to tampering. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a long-term record of substance use. Hair samples collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol usage up to a 3-month timeframe. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprised of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. "Scalp hair" refers to hair from the head, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for signs of drug use. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use concerns in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to hold legal weight. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positives during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug screening is notably complex.

Confirmation of positive screening results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Shows historical trends: It provides insight into the pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has a clear edge over urine testing in Paia, HI. It offers superior detection with an impressive accuracy and is also more reliable in providing insights on substance use.
Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers an extended detection window, capturing drug usage trends over a more extended period, which is critical for employers and professionals enforcing drug-free policies.

In comparison, while urine tests offer short-term insights, hair testing provides a detailed and longer detection record, making it a valuable tool for those seeking comprehensive data on drug use.

Extended Detection Window

In Paia, HI, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a game-changer. Unlike other methods, hair tests can trace drug use for up to three months, offering employers a detailed understanding of an individual's substance history.
This prolonged detection period equips organizations to make informed decisions on hiring and maintaining a drug-free workplace.

The ability to monitor drug use for 90 days means that hair testing not only identifies sporadic use but also helps in assessing patterns or regularities in drug intake, making it an invaluable tool for comprehensive screening.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Paia, HI, prioritize integrity by significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration.
The collection process is observed, and the sample itself is nearly impossible to tamper with, offering reliable and unquestionable results.
This makes hair testing a trusted choice for those seeking assurance in accurate drug testing outcomes without the fear of cheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
