Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Spreckelsville, Hawaii. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing. We operate testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be utilized. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with stringent drug use policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation often utilize hair testing. The key advantage is its prolonged detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observed collections, making it highly difficult to alter compared to urine tests, which remain best for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have emerged as an effective method for recognizing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide an alcohol and drug detection timeline of up to roughly 90 days. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen consisting of approximately 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in diameter) near the scalp furnishes 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal portion of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s protocol. This stage ensures the sample was securely packaged and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data input absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, a verified result requires confirmation to be valid in judicial settings. Samples that test positive during Screening need further verification.

When a sample tests positive at the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the existing sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), demonstrating why hair drug screening is the most challenging to execute.

Verification of a positive screening outcome is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples flagged as positive undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days past, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to circumvent: Hair drug tests are notably hard to circumvent, enhancing result precision.
  • Reveals usage trends: It identifies drug use trends over a timeframe, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to verify recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Influences like hair color and personal growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the actual hair and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
