In Waikele, Hawaii, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. If a follicle-based drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, providing testing facilities across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct such evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or alternative body hair is sufficient. Hair samples allow for testing of various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Various organizations, legal systems, and experts in substance misuse favor them over traditional urine analyses. This technique is implemented by employers endorsing strict anti-drug regulations, the judiciary, and those under probation. Hair tests benefit from a more extensive detection span, up to 90 days, executed through supervised collections which are extremely challenging to compromise. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the preferred method due to their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has developed into a robust mechanism for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. It maintains a lasting record by encapsulating chemical markers within the strands of the growing hair. Samples collected near the scalp offer a detection period of nearly three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

To obtain a sufficient sample for analysis and verification, a 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in diameter) near the scalp is necessary, yielding 100mg of hair. For tests involving EtG, extra add-ons, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. Head hair refers explicitly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug testing sample follows four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first entered into the lab's records. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any further data entry required outside an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening encompasses a preliminary examination for drug traces, offering a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples. However, a positive result during Screening must undergo confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes need additional verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the initial sample, prepared for Extraction. In this part, drug compounds are extracted at lower concentrations compared to other methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug analysis is one of the more complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any screening positives is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples with a presumptive positive result are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer detection span than urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair test, increasing result reliability.
  • Historical records: It provides a record of drug use trends over an extended period, beyond merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternate testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: The test, commonly called a "hair follicle test", actually examines the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
