Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Waipio, Hawaii. Whether it's hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair testing, and our centers nationwide can facilitate these tests. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body available for sampling. Hair analysis is applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle methods. This approach is favored by many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. It is ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, court orders, or probation conditions. The standout advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days with observed collection. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The detection of drug and alcohol use is effectively managed by hair testing, a method regarded as highly effective. Hair strands, as they grow, encapsulate biomarkers which give a prolonged history of substance use. By collecting hair near the scalp, this method can demonstrate a detection period extending up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the potential for tampering is limited, and the samples are conveniently shippable.

An optimal sample consists of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands near the scalp, equivalent to roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil, providing around 100mg of hair. This is sufficient for both screening and confirmatory processes. Nevertheless, for tests like EtG or ones exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to gather 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the specimen's weight. In cases where scalp hair collection isn’t possible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other forms such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning stage marks the sample's introduction into the lab's system, confirming the sample’s secure sealing and correct shipment. It also involves the allocation of a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) and the completion of any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

During the Screening process, an initial evaluation checks for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive finding must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples that yield a presumed positive in the Screening phase move on to a separate confirmation.

For samples testing presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair from the original sample is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods like urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging to execute.

Positive results in the Screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing if required before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair identification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Increased resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can chart a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot uncover recent drug use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Potentially varied results: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Benefits of Hair Follicle Testing over urine tests are evident in Waipio, HI. Hair tests offer superior accuracy and a longer detection window, providing more reliable results.

Urine tests may detect recent usage, but the extended detection period of hair tests identifies substance use history up to 90 days, ensuring comprehensive analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
