Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug screening services in Almo, Idaho. Whether you require a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise in hair testing includes facilities in all cities nationwide that can provide these tests. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or other body hair, depending on the circumstances. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse clinicians now favor hair drug tests over the more common urine tests. This approach is beneficial for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationary settings. A key advantage of hair testing is its extensive drug detection time frame, typically up to 90 days, with sample collection observed and resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an influential method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair documents a prolonged history of substances by integrating biomarkers into the fibers during growth. When cut close to the head, hair can furnish a detection timeframe of nearly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the head provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG, enhancements, and exams beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the weight of the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair includes all remaining types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into the lab’s system. This entails ensuring the sample’s sealing and shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While screening effectively excludes drug use in most samples, any positive result must be validated to be acknowledged legally. All samples with presumptive positive findings during screening need further confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex procedure to undertake.

To confirm any positive screening results, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a limited detection span.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite complex, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a historical pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
