Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bridge, Idaho. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in all major cities across the nation capable of conducting such tests. For most tests, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair samples can be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other bespoke testing possibilities.

In recent developments, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for assessing drug use. A growing number of employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation authorities favor these tests. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that makes them nearly tamper-proof. Despite this, urine tests remain preferable for detecting very recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand trap biomarkers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When speaking of head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage of initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks the sealing and proper shipment of samples, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial quick assessment for substance abuse. While it’s an inexpensive method to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed pre-confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely tough to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can depict a history of drug use over a period instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
