Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing in Butte City, Idaho. If you need to conduct a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this arena, with testing centers available in cities across the nation capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair test options.

Over recent years, the trend for drug testing methods has increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of these tests is their extended detection period, which can span up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust means for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair strands encapsulate a prolonged record of intoxicants by embedding biomarkers within their fibers as they grow. Collected proximal to the scalp, hair offers a detection period for substances of up to about three months. It is straightforward to gather, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the head yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial testing and verification. For add-ons such as EtG, and/or when testing surpasses 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be substituted. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternative types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to initial sample processing into the lab’s system, including ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, allotting a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any missing data input otherwise conducted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment to detect drugs of misuse. While this step cost-effectively dismisses drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples indicated as potentially positive during Screening need further confirmation.

When a Screening detects potential positivity, additional hair is extracted from the main sample for Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction from hair, where the concentration is considerably lower than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is undertaken through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as required before confirmation. The laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a reduced detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are hard to subvert, promoting result reliability.
  • Historical analysis: This method can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, rather than immediate use alone.

Limitations:

  • No immediate detection: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for hair to reflect drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations can vary due in part to hair color and individual differences in hair growth rates.

Note: Though frequently named "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft, not the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
