Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cambridge, Idaho. For those in need of drug or alcohol testing, our company is a leader in hair test services and operates testing locations across all U.S. cities where these tests can be facilitated. Generally, a sample of hair between 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substances.

The trend in drug testing increasingly favors hair follicle analysis. Employers, the legal system, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of urine tests. This change is due to hair follicle tests’ appeal to organizations enforcing strict drug-free protocols, such as employers, courts, and probation services. These tests offer extended detection times, viewing drug usage up to 90 days in an observed setting that minimizes cheating. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain superior in detecting substance intake accurately.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longer-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample results in a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to fake: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
