Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests for substance detection in Cascade, Idaho. Whether a test for drugs or alcohol is needed, we excel in hair analysis, with facilities accessible nationwide for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer it over urine testing. Zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation programs rely on hair tests. This method offers a detection span up to 90 days, involves supervised collection, and resists tampering. For drug use detection within 5 days, however, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. By gathering hair from near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The core steps in a laboratory's drug test result analysis include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s framework. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial swift evaluation for drug misuse. While it is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, a favorable result in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal validity. All samples showing a presumptive positive result require further confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a much subtler concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historic insight: This method presents a usage pattern over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and differences in individual hair growth may alter drug metabolite presence.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cascade, ID

Hair follicle tests offer several advantages over traditional urine tests, significantly improving detection accuracy. The extended detection window of hair testing allows for uncovering substance use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests provide a much shorter timeframe. This makes hair testing more dependable for long-term assessments.

Moreover, hair testing's resistance to tampering enhances its reliability. Unlike urine tests, which may be manipulated, hair samples are less likely to be altered. This reliable method is key for employers needing to enforce zero-tolerance policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Cascade, ID

Hair follicle testing offers an invaluable long-term view of substance use, providing insights over a 90-day period. For employers, this extended detection window is crucial for assessing an individual's history accurately, ensuring informed decisions regarding employment and compliance.

The benefit of a broad detection span means employers can detect usage patterns rather than isolated incidents, offering a comprehensive understanding of an applicant or employee's drug use history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests significantly reduce the risk of sample tampering, providing irrefutable results. Unlike other methods susceptible to manipulation, hair tests are collected under observation, ensuring sample integrity and accuracy. This makes them a reliable choice for any setting where impartial and trustworthy results are essential.

By leveraging hair testing's resistance to sample adulteration, organizations can maintain high standards of testing, removing uncertainty and enhancing confidence in results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
