Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Clover, Idaho. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing extends to all cities across the nation with facilities that administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for analysis. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options as required.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years as a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair testing over conventional urine tests. This method is favored for those with strict no-drug policies due to its extensive detection span of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Seen as an influential instrument, hair testing aids in detecting drug and alcohol consumption effectively. Hair serves as a long-term recorder of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an alcohol and drug detection span of up to roughly three months. It is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a greater amount of specimen, specifically 150mg, is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used as a substitute. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (beard, armpits, etc.).

Key Process Steps

There are four core stages in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab's processing system, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, associating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data that wasn't supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in a large number of samples at a lower cost, any positive findings require confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. This stage involves extracting drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation based on ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify substance use over a period stretching to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test results in more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: It reveals a historical pattern of substance usage over time, far beyond recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It usually takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically come with a higher price tag compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
