In Coolin, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and our nationwide centers are equipped to handle your needs. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests provide options for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized substances.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for screening drugs. Many employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse specialists favor hair testing over urine due to the stringent drug policies. The advantages of hair testing include an extended detection window of up to 90 days, the conclusiveness of observed sample collection, and the test's resistance to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand grows. Collecting hair near the scalp can offer a detection window for up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil), taken nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG, additional analyses, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair exclusively indicates scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data input if not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. All samples presumed positive during Screening need further verification.

Should Screening yield a presumptive positive result, additional hair is gathered from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screens is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a drug use pattern over a duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use not detectable: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become present in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test inspects the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Coolin, ID reveals several advantages. Hair testing's superior accuracy in detecting long-term drug use offers a significant benefit over urine tests, which are limited by shorter detection periods. Extended Detection Window

One of the key benefits of hair follicle testing in Coolin, ID is its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, hair follicle tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, providing employers with a comprehensive view of an employee or applicant's substance history. This long-term detection capability ensures a thorough substance use assessment, enhancing decision-making processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Coolin, ID, hair follicle drug tests offer a tamper-resistant testing method. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
