Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Daniels, Idaho. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, trust Accredited Drug Testing as experts in hair testing. We have facilities all over the Nation to perform hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body can be used. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and even specialized options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with no drug tolerance policies, courts, and probationary settings utilize hair follicle drug tests. Its main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, in an observed setting, making it very hard to compromise. Yet, the urine test remains the best for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It offers a long-term record of substance intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a nearly 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising about 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair—the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step wherein a sample is entered into the lab's system. This phase involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination to detect substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to discard drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples deemed potentially positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be judged presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Analysis over time: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not useful for recent use: Detecting drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair tests are more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Follicle over Urine Testing in Daniels, ID? Hair testing stands apart due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Where urine tests might miss traces beyond a few days, hair tests analyze long-term drug use effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
