In Eden, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Specializing in both hair and alcohol testing, we have numerous testing centers nationwide to facilitate the process. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for analysis. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored screening options.

Lately, the preferred method for drug analysis increasingly includes hair follicle testing. Various employers, judicial bodies, and addiction experts favor it over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as legal and probationary agencies, commonly rely on hair testing. The main advantage is its longer detection timeline, lasting up to 90 days, carried out under observation, and it is virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the most precise for usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Hair samples taken near the scalp can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. The sample collection is straightforward, with low risk of tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For tests involving EtG, additional markers, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used as an alternative. When discussing head hair, this pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory’s tracking system. This step ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data input not completed by an electronic tracking system.

Screening executes a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Screening offers a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug presence in most cases. However, a positive screening requires validation to be legally acceptable. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine, saliva), highlighting why hair drug analysis is notably complex.

Confirmation for any positive result from the screening process is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory series from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection range.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, thus ensuring accuracy of outcomes.
  • Chronological usage record: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • More costly: Hair drug tests typically incur greater expense compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests? In Eden, ID, hair testing demonstrates superior detection power and reliability. It not only provides a more comprehensive analysis but also reduces the chances of manipulation, ensuring accurate results.

The enhanced accuracy of hair analysis supports wider detection windows, offering a clearer picture of an individual's drug use history compared to traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
