Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elba, Idaho. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing extends nationwide with centers available in every city for conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown of the head, or body hair can be used in some scenarios. Hair testing offers analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Recently, the inclination toward hair follicle drug testing has increased. This method is increasingly preferred by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Hair tests provide a longer detection period, spanning up to 90 days, and are collected under supervision, making them nearly impossible to manipulate. However, when it comes to identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the more accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be considered legally valid. Samples indicating possible positive results in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should the Screening phase yield a possible positive result, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive detection is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which offer a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify results: The difficulty of tampering with hair drug tests enhances their reliability.
  • Historical usage patterns: This method can display a timeline of substance use, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading, as the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
