When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.
A 1.5-inch collection of about 200 strands of hair, resembling a #2 pencil, nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the best amount for both initial and confirmatory tests. For EtG tests, additions, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair should be used. 'Head hair' specifies scalp hair only, while 'body hair' includes all other hair types such as facial and axillary.
Process Overview
There are four principal steps in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.
Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, however, a positive result from screening requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.
Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from the hair at a much finer concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.
Confirmation of any presumptive positive results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
