Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Holbrook, Idaho. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by our nationwide testing centers which are available in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly preferred for drug screening. This change is observed among employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse specialists who now opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests, primarily due to their extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and strong resistance to fraud. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by storing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When trimmed close to the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximate 3-month window for alcohol and substance detection. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG assays, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample has been properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening is a preliminary examination for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug consumption in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to hold up in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

If the Screening phase returns a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in Extraction. This phase releases drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening particularly intricate.

Confirmation of any positive Screen results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have much shorter detection durations.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are harder to manipulate, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It can illustrate substance use trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
