Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Juliaetta, Idaho. Need a hair or alcohol test? Our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide, and we have locations in every city to conduct your test. Generally, hair on the crown of your head or other body parts must be 1.5 to 2 inches long for testing. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. They are preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies and are requested by probation offices as well. The major advantage is their extended detection period, covering up to 90 days, and their observed collection process makes cheating almost impossible. However, for drug screening in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been acknowledged as a compelling method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair can capture a historical timeline of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. Collected from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage history spanning up to about 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically apply to scalp hair alone, whereas body hair references all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test are grouped into four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning describes the incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This entails checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers a preliminary inspection for drug misuse. Although it is an efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, results marked positive during Screening need further confirmation to be validated for legal purposes. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require dual confirmation.

In instances where the Screening phase suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, traces of drugs are retrieved from the hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a complex methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples identified as presumptive positives are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing is capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Details historical usage: It sheds light on a chronological pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent usages.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: A time frame of approximately 5-7 days is required before drugs become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing entails greater costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variance in results: Influences like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the presence of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair shaft, not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Juliaetta, ID, hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. The benefits of hair testing go beyond its mere accuracy; it offers a more comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history. Unlike urine tests only capable of detecting recent use, hair tests provide a detailed analysis spanning up to 90 days.
This extended window ensures that substance use is more difficult to hide, offering greater reliability in results.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing in Juliaetta, ID is its extended detection window. Unlike conventional tests that offer a limited timeframe, hair testing examines usage over a lengthy period, often up to three months. This approach provides employers with a thorough understanding of an employee's or applicant's substance history.
For organizations seeking a detailed overview of drug use, this long detection window is invaluable.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Juliaetta, ID significantly mitigate the risk of sample tampering, ensuring results are reliable and credible. This testing method involves collecting a small hair sample that is virtually tamper-resistant, unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated. The integrity of the hair sample remains intact during the analysis process, providing unquestionable outcomes.
Such reliability is critical for judicial, employment, and personal drug testing needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
