If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be obtained. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in laboratory drug test result processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary expeditious assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for it to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory sequence, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.
