Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening solutions in McCammon, Idaho. For those needing hair or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair analysis, with testing centers in numerous cities nationwide conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can be tailored to detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair tests over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers choose hair follicle tests primarily for their extended detection periods, often up to 90 days. This supervised collection process makes tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair entraps biomarkers within the strands, offering an extensive history of substance use. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg amount is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent body hair sample may be utilized. Referring to head hair means only scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This process verifies sealing and proper shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry required beyond an electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-efficient, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening demand further verification.

Should a specimen test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis particularly challenging.

Confirmation of positive results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: They reveal drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer, as the test involves the hair shaft, not the follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in McCammon, ID revolves around its superior accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
