Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mink Creek, Idaho. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is typically sufficient. Hair tests are analyzable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals require hair drug tests rather than traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. The main advantage of hair tests is a considerably longer detection window of up to 90 days, using an observed collection process that is virtually uncheatable. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record for alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If the hair is taken near to the scalp, it can offer detection for alcohol and substances for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in dimension) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equal weight of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to any other type of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of evaluating a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This step encompasses confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive results must undergo confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples in the Screening phase require additional confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Difficult to compromise: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical context: It delivers a record of drug usage over a duration, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, however, the test assesses the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
