Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Moreland, Idaho. Should you require a hair-based screening for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city nationwide ready to conduct the procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body can be used for analysis. Hair tests can also screen for alcohol/ETG or other bespoke options.

Recently, drug testing techniques have increasingly favored the hair follicle test. Numerous employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists now mandate hair testing over urine due to zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, or probation requirements. Its main advantage is an extended detection window, preserving evidence of substance use up to 90 days, under supervised collection, rendering it tough to cheat. Yet, for drugs used within the last five days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for determining a drug test result includes the following main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes the initial step of being entered into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, though a positive result requires confirmation before being legally admissible. Any samples with presumptively positive results during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

Should the Screening stage yield a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical use data: Provides insights into drug consumption patterns over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limited detection of recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Moreland, ID, hair follicle testing stands out for its superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. With hair tests, substances can be detected far beyond the limited window of urine tests, ensuring a thorough review of an individual's drug history. This makes hair follicle testing an indispensable tool for employers and legal bodies.

Hair testing's reliability exceeds that of urine tests due to its longer detection window and resistance to tampering. This ensures that employers and professionals can trust the results, making informed decisions with confidence, unlike the potential inaccuracies that may arise from urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary advantages of hair follicle testing in Moreland, ID, is its extended detection window. Hair tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, offering employers a comprehensive view of substance usage patterns, which is far more extensive than that provided by traditional urine tests.

This extended detection period allows for a more comprehensive assessment of applicants or employees' substance history, ensuring that decision-makers have all the necessary information. It offers a broader understanding of an individual's past behavior, which is crucial for maintaining a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Moreland, ID, is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature, significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair testing offers reliable and unquestionable results, ensuring the integrity of the drug testing process is maintained.

This method provides a more secure testing environment, as the process of collecting and analyzing a hair sample eliminates many of the opportunities for interference. It ensures the most accurate representation of an individual's drug use, free of tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
