Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Murray, Idaho. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair analysis, our specialty lies in this field with nationwide testing facilities in every city capable of conducting such assessments. Generally, hair from the crown or body, at least 1.5 to 2 inches in length, is needed. The hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method over standard urine tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance treatment professionals now often opt for hair analysis. This method serves companies with strict drug-free policies, legal entities, and probation officers due to its longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, performed under observation, and its resistance to tampering. Urine testing remains the most effective for detecting recent drug use within five days of occurrence.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has emerged as an influential method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced from near the scalp, it offers a detection span for substances reaching up to around 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. Here, head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other forms (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial logging of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any required data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a swift preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening stands as the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
