Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Naples, Idaho. If you require a hair evaluation for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with centers nationwide ready to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as a method of drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments serve those with zero-tolerance policies, legal judgments, and probation terms. The key advantage of hair testing is its longer detection span, approximately up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, a urine test remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair only, while “body hair” includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first integrated into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it’s a cost-effective method for ruling out drug usage on most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase lead to more hair being retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The laboratory procedures, from Accessioning to Confirmation, are evaluated based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheat-proofing in hair tests results in higher reliability of outcomes.
  • Records past usage: It can show patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for hair to show detectable traces of drugs.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Aspects like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
