In Nezperce, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair analysis for drug and alcohol detection. Whether for hair drug tests or alcohol assessments, we excel in hair sampling, with facilities available across the nation. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be utilized. Hair analyses provide options for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

The hair follicle method has gained prominence in recent times for drug testing. Preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, it serves as an alternative to urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial systems, and probation services. Key advantages include an extended detection window—up to 90 days—and an overseen collection process that deters manipulation, though urine tests excel at identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month period of detection for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and is easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and instances requiring more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we talk about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory progression of a drug test result consists of four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory phase where a sample is introduced into the laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data input not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid scan for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that are initially positive in Screening need subsequent verification.

Should a sample be initially positive during the Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are taken from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening is carried out with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a preliminary positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to evade: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolites concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is done on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
