In Nounan, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair tests nationwide, over various cities, we ensure thorough examination. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is typically required. These assessments can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized testing solutions.

Recently, employing hair follicle drug assessments has gained traction. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor these over traditional urine tests. These tests are imperative for zero-tolerance drug policies and supervising probationary individuals, offering a more extended detection range up to 90 days and are hardly falsifiable. However, urine tests remain best for recent drug use detection within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimum quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair alone. Conversely, body hair encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The process for laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, creates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

The Screening stage involves an immediate assessment for drug use. Although Screening offers an economical means to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples returning presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmed positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection frame.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: This test delivers a depiction of drug use patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There’s an approximate 5-7 day period before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
