Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oldtown, Idaho. Specializing in hair-based drug or alcohol testing, we have centers across the nation ready to assist with your needs. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation officers, favor this method for its extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days. Conducted under observation, these tests are nearly impossible to tamper with compared to urine tests, which remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The structural makeup of hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drugs since it traps biomarkers within the fibers of the actively growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection range of around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen from about 200 hair strands (roughly resembling a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome primarily involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While this is an economical method to discard drug use in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening require secondary verification.

Should a specimen show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original collection and made ready for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before verification if needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more concise detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a trend of drug usage over time, rather than recent ingestion alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are often pricier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variance: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Oldtown, ID
The advantages of choosing hair follicle over urine testing are clear in Oldtown, with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests identify recent drug use, hair tests reveal patterns of substance use over a more extended period, typically up to 90 days, offering a broader overview.

Employers aiming for a drug-free environment benefit significantly from the comprehensive detection window that hair tests provide. This extensive detection surpasses the capabilities of urine tests, making hair follicle testing the preferred method for ensuring workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
