Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Parker, Idaho. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, our company specializes in this area, featuring testing locations across all cities in the US capable of executing hair assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair examinations can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific needs.

In recent trends, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. This method is now favored by many employers and legal entities over the traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The standout advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, typically spanning up to 90 days, gathered under scrutiny, and presenting minimal chances to exploit. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by entrapping biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. If cut close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to a 3-month duration. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch bundle comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is preferred. Utilize a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair may be gathered. When indicating head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the laboratory for processing a drug test incorporates four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result mandates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted for Preparation. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Final confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation, if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating deterrence: Cheating on a hair drug test is significantly difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical context: It provides a timeline of drug use spanning time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
