Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug analysis in Parma, Idaho. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with our facilities available in every city across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head crown or body can be used. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair-specific tests.

More recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become a more prominent method for drug detection. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug examinations over conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle drug assessments are implemented by companies with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is the substantially extended detection timeframe for drug use, which spans up to 90 days, is conducted under direct supervision, and is exceedingly difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for monitoring drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair analysis can provide nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch portion from around 200 hairs (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, providing an optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG testing, additional panels exceeding 10 require 150mg of material. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a precision scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in the lab analysis of drug test samples include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data that an electronic chain of custody might miss.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug presence in most samples, positive screens require confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples testing positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening, additional hair is taken from the original collection for the Extraction phase. This involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

A positive screening result's Confirmation is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive hair samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assays can uncover drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine exams, which offer smaller detection periods.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly unlikely, yielding reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: This method can show patterns of drug consumption over time, not solely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Does not reveal recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more compared to other testing types.
  • Result variability: Variations in hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
