If you're looking for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pearl, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have facilities nationwide, including all major cities, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice for testing. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing over recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair testing over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month insight into exposure to alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental requests, or over 10-panel tests, acquiring 150mg of the sample is advisable. We encourage using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample accurately. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is entered into a laboratory's system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: It provides an overview of drug usage trends over time, and not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug testing is pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," this analysis evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
