Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Peck, Idaho. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair-based evaluations, with facilities in every major city across the United States capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair analyses can pinpoint drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized assessments.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle assessments. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Those with strict anti-drug workplace policies, courts, and individuals under probation often turn to hair testing. The main advantage is the extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, with supervised collection making it almost impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fiber's growth strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can show evidence of alcohol and other substances for up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately equal to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. To test for EtG, additional substances, and/or more than 10 different drugs, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, the same amount of body hair can be used instead. When referencing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory drug testing through hair analysis encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening represents an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified for it to be legally valid. Any sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening needs further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive in the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests typically have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: Hair tests provide a timeline of drug consumption over a longer period, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug test methods.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
