Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Potlatch, Idaho. When you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with centers across the nation equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, hair strands measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored hair analysis choices.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method for substance testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. This is especially true for organizations with strict drug policies and individuals under probation. The key advantage is its extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, collected under vigilant observation, making it hard to manipulate, though for recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair, it offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs. When collected from the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken from the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When speaking of head hair, we mean hair from the scalp. Body hair includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps for processing a drug test result involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into a lab's records. This step entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data not entered through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for substance use. Though Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary check.

Should a sample be presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and is prepped for Extraction. In this phase, hair is broken down to detect drugs at lesser concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging technique to execute.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive-presumed samples are cleaned prior to confirmation, if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, favoring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect immediate usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Element like hair color and individual hair growth variation can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
