Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Preston, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing stands out. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing, boasting facilities nationwide ready to perform such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailor-made.

There has been an increasing shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for screening. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to their longer detection ability, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine testing remains the go-to for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the strands. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, tricky to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial setup of a sample within a lab's database. It ensures the sample's seal and shipping were intact, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other necessary data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid check for substance misuse. Though Screening is a budget-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a favorable screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive from the Screening must have secondary validation.

For samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis among the toughest approaches.

Any positive results in screening are confirmed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed. This entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect usage over up to 90 days, unlike the shorter period offered by urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can map a trend of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't show recent activity: Drugs are only visible in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair shade and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
