Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Rockland, Idaho. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair assessments, with facilities in cities across the country. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally necessary. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing options.

Lately, drug testing methodologies increasingly adopt hair follicle testing. An array of employers, judicial bodies, and those in Substance Abuse professions opt for hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Employers upholding strict drug-free mandates, the judiciary, and people on probation employ these tests. Hair follicle testing offers a more extended drug use detection span, usually up to 90 days, using an observed process that's tough to falsify. Yet, for detections within 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional requests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair signifies scalp hair only, while body hair includes other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating difficulty: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus offering more accurate results.
  • Historical data provision: This method can highlight a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5–7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rockland, ID, hair follicle tests outshine urine tests by detecting substances over a broader timeline. They provide a more accurate depiction of long-term drug use, while traditional urine tests focus on short-term exposure.

The reliability of hair tests surpasses urine tests, minimizing false negatives. The observed collection process of hair testing mitigates cheating risks, offering peace of mind to employers and decision-makers.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Rockland, ID, allows for up to 90 days of drug use detection. This extended detection period provides employers with a holistic view of an individual's substance history.

Unlike other methods, hair testing reveals patterns of drug use, helping employers make informed decisions. This long detection window places hair tests above others for comprehensive background checks.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle tests in Rockland, ID, is unmatched. With a method that reduces the likelihood of adulteration, these tests stand as a reliable tool for substance verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
