Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Stanley, Idaho. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in it and have centers across the nation, including all cities. For testing, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Our hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, favoring it over standard urine tests. Hair drug tests are preferred for zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probationary requirements. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection timeframe—typically up to 90 days. Conducted under observation, these tests are incredibly challenging to tamper with, though for detection within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into a laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any necessary additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to examine most samples for drug use, a positive result must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require further confirmation through a secondary process.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly diminished concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo a preparatory wash prior to confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
