Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening for residents of Strevell, Idaho. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol analysis that's needed, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across various cities nationwide to accommodate. Typically, hair should measure 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide specialized testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a more prevalent method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly favoring hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and probationary monitoring often employ hair tests. Their key advantage is an extended detection range of up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making them practically tamper-proof. However, for identifying very recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hairs (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels beyond ten, 150mg of the sample is recommended. We advise using a jeweler's scale for specimen weight measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage across most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. Presumptive positive samples identified during Screening require additional confirmatory testing.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging methodologies.

The Confirmation of a positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and statutory compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day span, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: The difficulty of manipulating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: Offers a drug use timeline extending over a duration, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Strevell, ID: The hair follicle test offers superior detection capabilities over urine tests. Hair retains drug metabolites for up to 90 days, providing a longer observation window, while urine tests typically detect drug use over a shorter period.

Additionally, hair tests are less invasive and more resistant to tampering. These factors make hair testing a more reliable choice for detecting substance use, giving employers confidence in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Strevell, ID: Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window up to 90 days, giving employers a detailed substance history. By examining this prolonged period, employers gain insights into long-term patterns, unmatched by short-term urine tests.

This extended window captures more than just recent substance use, identifying habitual use, vital for safety-critical roles, enhancing employer decision-making capabilities.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
