Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Turner, Idaho. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers spread across the nation, available in all cities to conduct these examinations. A segment of hair measuring between 1.5 and 2 inches is needed, generally taken from the crown or body. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis in recent years. This method is becoming preferable for employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, taking precedence over traditional urine tests. Organizations with a firm stance against drug use, legal systems, and probationary services often opt for hair testing. A key advantage is its capacity to identify drug use over an extended period of roughly 90 days, with observations made during sample collection, making evasion almost impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best option for detecting recent drug use within a five-day span.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, results in 100mg of hair—considered the optimal sample for both screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, this pertains strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid evaluation for potential drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed to hold up in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a confirmatory test.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: Capable of revealing a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Particulars such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
