In Tuttle, Idaho, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in hair testing across numerous locations nationwide, ready to perform the examination. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Options include detecting drugs, alcohol, ETG, and other customized testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in drug testing procedures. This method is now preferred by more employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine testing. Zero-tolerance policy employers, judicial systems, and probation programs all utilize these tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected via supervised methods, providing a virtually tamper-proof process. Urine tests remain more precise for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a repository for a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests above 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four fundamental steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample as it enters the lab’s system, including verifying that it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not included via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary quick examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly means to discount drug use for most samples, a positive outcome in Screening needs to be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from the hair in much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: These tests provide a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called “hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
