Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug exams in Abingdon, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty at Accredited Drug Testing is hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body for testing. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods are increasingly featuring hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and those on probation use hair follicle tests. The notable advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making it nearly uncheatable. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term record by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) right by the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advised to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial sample processing into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. All samples that screen positive require additional confirmation.

If the sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Tests in Abingdon, IL is a topic gaining attention. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
