Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Addieville, Illinois. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in every city nationwide poised to conduct these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body suffices for testing. Hair analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified assessments.

In recent times, drug assessments increasingly rely on hair follicle examinations. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor these over standard urine tests. They are employed by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation, owing to their extensive 90-day detection period, supervised collection, and near-impossibility of cheating. Yet, for recent 5-day detections, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within its fibers, hair delivers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug use. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 90 days for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen consisting of approximately 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional services, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen accurately. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test result in a lab involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial integration of the sample into the lab’s system. This process ensures that the sample remains sealed and is dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step entails a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Since Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a screen that tests positive necessitates confirmation to serve as legal evidence. Samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases where Screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the toughest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for a period of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection timeframes.
  • Challenging to deceive: It’s highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals historical data: It offers a chronological pattern of drug use over an extended duration, rather than just indicating recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There’s a 5-7 day timeframe before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term being "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Excels

Compared to traditional urine testing, hair follicle testing in Addieville, IL, surpasses in detecting drug use with enhanced accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a prolonged detection window, capturing drug residues missed by conventional urine samples. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
