Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Albion, Illinois. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers, available in cities nationwide, conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often require hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests suit zero-tolerance organizations, legal systems, and probation clients, providing a longer detection window—up to 90 days—and an observed collection, minimizing the chance for tampering. Urine tests remain most effective for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can deliver detection for up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 hair strands or nearly the size of a #2 pencil closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional measures, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample amounting to 150mg is advisable. We propose using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be scarce, an equivalent weight of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically indicates scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four core phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial process of incorporating a sample into a lab’s records. This phase entails confirming that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data input absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening consists of a rapid preliminary evaluation for abused drugs. Despite Screening being a budget-friendly way to disregard drug utilization in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid legally. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening process, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive results from screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation follows the guidelines of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It provides an overview of drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", this analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp
