Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Algonquin, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing and vast network of testing centers across the Nation ensure you access to testing no matter your location. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for analysis. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug testing increasingly favors hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now choose hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Such tests are ideal for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their primary advantage lies in detecting drug use over a much longer period, approximately 90 days, with the process being observed to ensure integrity and rendering attempts to cheat almost futile. However, when detecting drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is easy, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches and about 200 hair strands (similar in girth to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for optimal screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. In comparison, "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is encapsulated in four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is introduced into a laboratory's system. It involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift verification for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly strategy for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admission. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

The Confirmation of a positive screening result is via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample with a presumptive positive status is cleansed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory process spanning Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can spot drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that present a narrower detection window.
  • Challenging to forge: Manipulating hair drug tests is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over an epoch rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other modalities.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth changes can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
